About
United Design Review is for readers who want to understand why designed things look and work as they do. We cover objects, graphics, interiors, architecture and the history that connects them, using clear explanations rather than specialist shorthand.
Start with what you can see
A chair, a page, a room or a building offers clues: its proportions, materials, arrangement and details. We use those clues to explain how a design guides use, catches attention or responds to its setting. You do not need formal training to join in; curiosity is a good starting point.
Explain choices, not just appearances
A strong design discussion asks what a choice changes. We compare forms and materials in context, distinguish description from interpretation, and make room for more than one reasonable reading. Our aim is to leave readers better able to look, ask and decide for themselves.
A wide view of design
Design does not stop at a product or a building. It includes the printed information we follow, the rooms we move through and the ways objects meet their users. We choose subjects that can be explored clearly and usefully without presenting personal taste as a universal rule.
Design is a set of choices we can learn to see.
We look beyond appearance to ask what a design does, how it is made legible and who it serves. Noticing those choices makes familiar things more interesting.
